Discovered by William Herschel in 1783.

NGC 1055 is a fine edge-on spiral with a faint dust lane along its equator. It is situated close to M77, and a member of the M77 group. It was discovered by William Herschel on December 19, 1783, and cataloged as H I.1, the first object in his type I category of "bright" nebulae. It was later cataloged by John Herschel also and cataloged as his h 258, and later included in his General Catalogue of 1864 as GC 591, which became NGC 1055 in J.L.E. Dreyer's NGC of 1888.
