Date: Sep 27, 2002 From: Vitaly Smolianchuk and Vyacheslav Subject: Messier Plus Marathon from Memory from Ukraine Hello Hartmut. Here's our little story about passing Messier Plus Memory Marathon which made ukrainian observer Smolianchuk Vitaly and Vyacheslav Bogdanets. Ukraine is at war. Now the hostilities are taking place far away from our city, thanks to the Ukrainian Army and we are almost back to normal life. Of course, the time for a traditional Messier Marathon is already lost. That's why we decided to complet Messier Plus Marathon, but complete it as no one has done before - to complete Messier Plus Marathon by memory. It is good that we have experience of running a Messier Memory Marathon in 2020 (103) and 2021(99) . But Messier Plus Marathon is much more difficult, because there are almost star-like planetary nebulaes, open clasters which locate among most populate parts of Milky Way, quite dim galaxies. It happened in the night 25/26 of September from the base of "Astropolis" club near Kyiv. That was pretty good night with SQM 21,65. Smolianchuk Vitaly used 200/1000 Newtonian dobson, Vyacheslav Bogdanets used 100 ED on the eq/mount. There was pretty cloudy at evening but in 19:50 sky became clear and we started... At first we were afraid that the clouds would return and we ran the Marathon quite fast. And yes, the clouds returned somewhere at 11:00 p.m., then we realized that we had already passed about 70 objects and we could take our time. Then we began to devote a lot of time to take a good look at the objects. Vitaly was able to see the spiral in NGC 2403, M 81, M 33, M 74. Vyacheslav liked M 33, M 45, M 42. Next was the heaviest object of the whole marathon NGC 1535, a rather small planetary nebulae and when we needed to look at it, our optics fogged up. Also, m93 from memory in a fairly bright sky is also a very difficult object. It was difficult and we managed to see all 110 objects without any maps. I am also attaching a more detailed schedule of the Marathon. BR, Vitaly and Vyacheslav
