Since it is impossible to see all the objects from the 50N latitude, I decided to go a bit south this year. I took an air trip to the Portuguese island of Madeira, located at 32.7 degrees north latitude. I ran three marathons there from March 17 to 20. The first using only 12×50 binoculars, the other two using a portable 10" f/4 dobsonian telescope. The first night on the west coast I missed only two objects: M74 in the evening due to the strong zodiacal light and M30 in the morning. The next night I went up into the mountains to an altitude of 1800 metres above sea level. From there, I was able to easily log all 110 objects, only M30 in the morning was very difficult. After this experience, during the last night I repeated the result of the previous run from the seashore with greater ease. The first 48 objects took me only 10 minutes, then I observed a few more at 2am and finally the rest except M30 within 15 minutes before dawn. I had to wait another 30 minutes for the M30. All observations were made from memory. I wrote a report in Czech: http://udalosti.astro.cz/?p=13833 Take care! Viktor Trnka Czech Astronomical Society
