"Akash Mitra" from Pune, India (http://akashmitra.wordpress.com/) conducted the 2007 Messier Marathon from Pokhri, about 125 km north of Pune, on 17-18 March. The west was cloudy for an hour before sunset, and we were worried as we travelled. The western clouds more or less cleared by sunset, though some haze lingered along, and only 2 of us could spot Andromeda. Barring the initial 4-5 objects that many missed, it went well till about 9 pm or so. Then it clouded over yet again. We had dinner earlier than planned but the clouds didn't budge. I halted my effort, but due credit to others who persevered and worked their way through the gaps in clouds. It was the clouds who gave up by 12:30! Sensing that the rest of the MM was still possible, I resumed. M46-47 had not yet set, fortunately. And the sky was quite clear thereafter. Final counts: Adwait Bhagwat: 61, Tushar Purohit: 65, Abha Vaishampayan: 79, Kshitija Kelkar: 82 (her first MM), Harshad Abhyankar: 108 (missed M110 and M74 in the evening). Most of us had 5" - 6" newtonians. Tushar & Adwait had 20x80 binocs. Objects missed by most were about 4-5 galaxies in the evening, most of the Vir-Com and a couple of UMa galaxies, and 5-6 clusters in the morning. regards, - Harshad.
