Supernova 2006ov in M61

Supernove 2006ov flashed up in M61 when it was close to its (and Virgo's) conjunction to the Sun, as seen from Earth. Therefore, it was discovered only when it was already at some age, on November 24, 2006 by Japanese amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki. Located 5.5" east and 51" north of the center of M61, just near the northern end of M61's bar, it was found when it was at magnitude 14.8. From its spectrum, it was determined to be a supernova of type II.
