Usage of images, videos and web texts from NOIRLab
Unless specifically noted, the images, and videos distributed on the
public NOIRLab website, along with the texts of press releases, announcements,
pictures of the week, blog posts and captions, are licensed under a
Creative Commons
Attribution 4.0 International License, and hence may on a non-exclusive
basis be reproduced without fee provided the credit is clear and visible.
Details on how to interpret this are given below for those who need further
explanation:
Conditions
- The text of press releases, announcements, pictures of the week and
captions should be credited to NOIRLab, except when used by media.
- NOIRLab materials, images and videos may not be used to state or imply the
endorsement by NOIRLab or any NOIRLab employee of a commercial product or
service;
- If an image includes a picture of an identifiable person, using that image
for commercial purposes is not permitted unless the person has provided
explicit permission.
Notes
- Note that this general permission does not extend to the use of NOIRLab’s
logo, which shall remain protected and may not be used or reproduced without
prior and individual written consent from NOIRLab (Email info at noirlab.edu).
Owners of external websites wishing to link to the NOIRLab website may use
NOIRLab’s logo for the link, provided they have obtained prior authorization
from the NOIRLab Communications, Education & Engagement Department and on
the condition that such use is clearly identifiable as a web link.
- Also note that music, scientific papers, code, and text other than press
releases, announcements, images of the week and captions on this site are
not released under the
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License
and can not be used for non-NOIRLab products.
- By reproducing NOIRLab material, in part or in full, the user acknowledges
the terms on which such use is permitted.

Conditions of Use AURA/NOAO materials
The materials created, authored and/or prepared by NOAO are
copyrighted in content, presentation, and intellectual or
creative origin.
Use of AURA/NOAO images constitutes acceptance of these guidelines.
I. GENERAL CONDITIONS
AURA/NOAO images may not be used to state or imply the endorsement
by AURA/NOAO or by any AURA/NOAO employee of a commercial product,
service or activity, or be used in any other manner that might mislead.
Use of AURA/NOAO names and/or logos in publicity, promotion, or advertising
is prohibited without prior written consent of AURA/NOAO.
AURA/NOAO should be acknowledged as the source of its materials, products,
and technologies.
It is unlawful to falsely claim copyright or other rights in AURA/NOAO
material.
AURA/NOAO shall in no way be liable for any costs, expenses, claims
or demands arising out of use of AURA/NOAO images by a recipient or
a recipient's distributee's.
AURA/NOAO personnel are not authorized to sign "hold harmless"
statements or documents granting exclusive rights.
II. ELECTRONICALLY AVAILABLE IMAGES
Electronic products such as images and captions created and/or
prepared by NOAO are copyrighted in content, presentation, and
intellectual origin. These electronically available materials
are considered intellectual property and are intended for use for
educational, academic, and research purposes and are not intended
for commercial use. Electronic versions of images are protected
by copyright as intellectual property unless noted otherwise.
Copyright and Credit Statements
Any use of NOAO images should include the following copyright statement:
"Copyright Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy
Inc. (AURA), all rights reserved."
Images specifically identified as coming from the WIYN 3.5-m telescope
on Kitt Peak require the following statement:
"Copyright WIYN Consortium, Inc., all rights reserved."
Some images have been copyrighted by individuals. In these cases
please use the copyrights specified; please contact the individual
if questions arise.
Appropriate credit lines would be:
"National Optical Astronomy Observatories/National Science Foundation"
or
"NOAO/NSF".
Additional credit lines may be required for specific images.
Non-Commercial Use:
For its copyrighted images, NOAO allows reproduction, authorship of
derivative works, and other transformations of the original work
strictly for educational and research purposes without further permission,
subject to the General Conditions stated above. For other non-commercial
uses, permission should be obtained from AURA/NOAO.
Commercial Use:
For copyrighted materials, permission should be obtained from the
copyright owner, AURA/NOAO, prior to use. NOAO will work with vendors
on a case by case basis to establish appropriate permissions for use,
which in some cases may involve a royalty agreement. If a recognizable
person appears in an image, use for commercial purposes may infringe a
right of privacy or publicity, and permission should be obtained from
the recognizable person.
General Use:
Electronic products may not be used in an inappropriate manner.
Inappropriate use includes but is not limited to: religious materials,
gang related materials, ethnic background materials, and political
information. The use of images must not imply endorsement by AURA/NOAO
of organizations, products, or services using the images. Commercial
vendors should submit a description of the intended use of the images
to the contact person named below for verification of appropriate use.
